MSU Wireless Update

posted on February 14, 2012 9:35am

For the last few months, the new SSIDs (MSUnet, MSUnet 2.0) were running in conjunction with the old SSIDs (MSUnet Wireless, MSUnet Wireless 2.0). Therefore, users saw both the old and new SSIDs in their wireless launch menu.

On March 7, 2012, the Wireless Networking Team will disable the old SSIDs so that only the new, shortened SSIDs will appear in the wireless launch menu. This cleanup is necessary because the number of SSIDs has an adverse impact on the performance of the wireless network as a whole.

WIRELESS 3.0 COMING

Beginning in late February 2012, MSU ATS Wireless Networking will start installing Wireless 3.0 across campus. These installations will continue indefinitely.

MSU Wireless users can expect to see the new network show up as “MSUnet 3.0” in their wireless launch menu. This MSUnet 3.0 SSID is a necessary change because MSU is working with a new wireless vendor. The technology of MSUnet 3.0 is the same as MSUnet 2.0 and both use the 802.11n wireless standard.
